Just do it !

just do it!

Le slogan publicitaire de Nike n’est pas façile à traduire en français. Que veut dire cette expression? Le mot 'just' est un faux ami. Quant il est utilisé comme adjectif, il peut souvent se traduire par 'juste' en voulant dire équitable.

Nike’s advertising slogan is not easy to translate into French. What does this expression mean? The word 'just' is a 'false friend'. When used as an adjective, it can often be translated as 'juste' meaning equitable.

A just decision

Une décision juste

And its often translated as 'seulement'.

Just a little

Juste un peu

Mais 'Just do it' n’est pas si évident. Google traduit 'just do' par 'il suffit de faire.

Just take this medicine…

Il suffit de prendre ce médicament…

That`s acceptable but in English there is a nuance that will be lost in our Nike slogan. In the context where we use 'just' followed by a verb, we can often find a reason not to do or act (depending on the verb used).

Thus, the adverb 'just' implies 'despite the obstacles', despite the circumstances, no matter what others say. etc.

Of course in Nike’s slogan, the context is sport. So, despite your physical limitations, no matter what others say, (including your opponent?), despite the fear! You can overcome anything!

Its a very well thought out slogan!
